Renovated Loft, Adaptive Reuse | North Loop, Minneapolis

Re-Imagined Space

This Loft is located in the North Loop, which is a busy Minneapolis neighborhood full of historic warehouses. The brick building that the loft sits in was built in 1913 and served as a farm tool factory and a car showroom, amongst other uses. In 1998, the well-respected Architect Garth Rockcastle of MSR began the adaptive reuse of the warehouse to turn it into urban lofts.

Our client wanted to personalize his unit and re-configure some of the space’s oddities. His main concern was addressing the awkward flow of the staircase, which connects all three levels and the roof-top deck. To address this, we re-imagined the vertical sequence of the tall, three-level unit. We relocated and replaced the stair which previously blocked the entry hall. The first stretch of the stair now sits over the renovated kitchen, with the cabinetry tucked underneath the treads to elegantly maximize storage.

We also expanded the second floor, which serves as the Owner’s Suite, to make room for a larger bathroom. The luxurious bath has high glass walls which let the the bathroom's skylight illuminate beyond the room itself.
