The rambler was demolished down to the foundation to allow for a new space which maximizes connections to the outdoors. Corner windows give panoramic views to the pond. The large windows along with a playful trim and panel layout lend a touch of whimsy and character to a limited palette of exterior materials. Although the home changed dramatically, the modest construction budget was kept in check by largely staying within the footprint of the existing structure.
The interior of the home was designed with some unique personal details. The island was designed to accommodate the client’s heirloom chopping block within one corner. A free-standing structural column was crafted from a Douglas fir timber, flamed in the style of ShouSugi Ban to provide a textured counterpoint to the smooth interior surfaces.
