As the family archivist, the homeowner was looking to reimagine an existing attic office as a more open, functional and enjoyable work space. Specifically, the design was to include a large desk space for laying out family photos and writings, more filing cabinets, and built-in bookshelves for storage. The location of the home is in one of the highest parts of south Minneapolis which gave the third-floor space great potential for transforming the attic with natural light and views.

Several major design moves contributed to the openness of the space. The existing roof was restructured for a west facing dormer and skylight. An unused chimney was removed and three additional windows were added facing west. The homeowner and the architect worked closely to design appropriate desk, storage, and shelf space, as well as a comfortable lounge area next to a picture window. High performance insulation was used throughout the attic to keep the new space comfortable as well as improve the thermal performance of the entire house. An open railing was designed to further open the space up, and a punch of color was added to the gable end as a playful way to brighten the space.
