Single-Story ADU Design Featured in Newspaper
The Sun Sailor, a St. Louis Park newspaper, recently featured our single-story accessory dwelling unit (ADU) design in their newspaper!
The ADU design was inspired by St. Louis Park’s recent ADU legalization. St. Louis Park’s new city code is unique because it limits ADUs to a height of 15 feet, thus limiting the structure to a single-story. In comparison, all of our completed ADU’s are located in cities with less restrictive height limitations and are built above detached garages.
To respond to this new design challenge of a single-story ADU, we at Christopher Strom Architects developed an ADU prototype, called the “Park Suite.” The Park Suite is a single-story, one-bedroom ADU with three different roof designs (shown above).
Although the Park Suite is developed to be cost efficient, the various roof structures add personality and flair to the small home. Of course, clients are able to fully customize the ADU to make it a higher-end space, if they so choose.
As described in the article, “One roof type resembles a mid-century modern rambler-style home while another type is flatter, with a more modern box design. Strom described the third as having a V-shape mimicking butterfly wings.”
