Wisconsin Cabin Showcased in the 2025 Homes by Architects Tour
We are excited to announce that our newest Wisconsin cabin will be a featured home in the 2025 Homes by Architects Tour!
This year's tour, run by AIA Minnesota, features 16 homes available to tour in person and 2 homes that you can explore virtually. The event offers a close-up look at how architectural design makes a difference in our lives. Homes of all types, sizes, budgets, and sites will be available to tour in person on Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28, 2025, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm each day. A virtual tour will be available to view online Saturday, September 27–Sunday, October 12.
Tickets for this event will go on sale in August. Follow the Homes by Architects Tour website and instagram page for the most up-to-date information.
Our featured home is a Wisconsin cabin built to give The Clients a larger home on their wooded lakeside lot. An original one-room timber framed cabin was built by hand in the 1990’s, with a bunk house constructed shortly after, and more recently an informal indoor gathering space to entertain guests was added. The original cabin was relocated on the site further inland, to make way for a new home with modern amenities that still maintains a cozy cabin feel.
As a nod to the original cabin, the new cabin incorporates timber framing (no nails or metal connections!) in the Kitchen / Great Room. Those spaces are designed as the main gathering space with food prep as a shared activity. The Great Room seating is open to Kitchen for easy conversation and bookended by views of the lake and a stone fireplace on the other side.
The cabin is located on a peninsula with 180-degree views of the lake. The windows were strategically placed to maximize lake views, provide natural light, and facilitate cross breezes.
The Entry is nestled between two gables and opens to an inviting Dining Room table and a framed view of the lake. The Owner’s Suite is on the ground level, allowing the clients to age in place, and the Lower-Level Guest Bedrooms all offer views of the lake. A three-sided Screen Porch on the main floor has uninterrupted views of the lake.
The exterior is clad in natural stone and thermally modified wood, both locally sourced. SIPs (Structural Insulted Panels) were used on the roof and exterior insulation on the walls to prevent thermal bridging and increase energy efficiency.
The Clients are in the design industry themselves, and understand the value of having an architect on their design team to integrate elegant design solutions with robust technical details. Having an architect on the team to refine and resolve these elements was crucial to its success, thus making this project a candidate for the Homes by Architects Tour. We look forward to the completion of this project and the start of the Tour in September!
