Side Street Suite wins Home of the Month
Side Street Suite, an accessory dwelling unit (ADU), was selected by AIA MN and Star Tribune as Home of the Month for December 2019. The 640-square-foot home sits perched among trees in South Minneapolis’ Longfellow neighborhood. The design balances privacy with connection to the outdoors. Although a small footprint, the ADU feels spacious due to the generous amount of natural light. Three skylights, a south-facing kitchen window, and sliding glass doors maximize the views and allow the client to experience the changing sun throughout the day. The thoughtful design of the space allowed room for a walk-in-closet, full bathroom, and washer/dryer. The client infused the space with his own personal flair, seen in the sliding yellow doors and a bright orange window above the kitchen sink.
The client became interested in an ADU after becoming an empty nester. He found that the home he had raised his family in was too large for his current needs, and wanted increased freedom and lowered maintenance. Now the client rents out his previous home, which is on the same property.
ADU’s are flexible spaces that allow for changes in life, such as a place for aging parents, an apartment for an adult child, or a rental property.
